“How do I do this?” Rhett’s gruff voice rings out, and my eyes fly open. He’s staring at the junction of my arm, the very tip of the needle pressed against a stark blue-green vein. Sweat rolls down his temples, but his hands are steady—sure.

I lift my left hand and wrap my fingers around his on the syringe. “You press it into my skin. Be firm but not harsh; veins roll, and they’re delicate. Once you see blood, push down on the plunger, then be quick to release the knot on the condom and pull it out of my arm at the same time.”

He looks up at me through his lashes. Deep blue eyes stare into my fucking soul, and for a moment—just the tiniest moment—I imagine how different this all could be. If I wasn’t an addict. If he didn’t hate me so much, for whatever reason.

We could probably be happy? But that’s foolish. That’s not what this is. This is reality. His fingers are on the syringe, ready to inject poison into my body and me, sitting here naked and desperate for whatever he’ll give me.

Fuck him for making me need him. This.

I hiss as the tiny, sharp bite of the needle enters into my epidermis. My fingers wrapped around Everett’s move as he pushes the plunger down. With a deep inhale, my head swims as my body flushes with a deep warmth. I let my eyes flutter closed, trusting Rhett inexplicably.

It all happens so quickly, yet I swear I can feel every millisecond tick loudly in the deepest recesses of my brain. There’s a pinch and then the snap of rubber rings out through the room.

“Fuck…”

Everything around me falls away as euphoria washes through me like the biggest wave crashing against the shore.

All I feel is warm and tingly as I float on a cloud.

Nothing matters anymore…

How did I ever think I could live without this?
